Hip Replacement Q&A

What is hip replacement?

Hip replacement is a surgical procedure that replaces your diseased or damaged hip joint with a prosthetic device. Orthopedic surgeons like Dr. Berni perform hip replacement to relieve hip pain and restore joint health, function, and mobility.

During the procedure, Dr. Berni replaces the damaged ball joint in your hip with a prosthetic metal stem and metal ball and the hip socket joint with a metal cup.

Traditionally, surgeons perform hip replacement using large incisions that require long hospital stays. But with advances in surgical tools and techniques, Dr. Berni performs hip replacement procedures so there’s no need to spend days in the hospital following the procedure.

Who needs hip replacement?

Dr. Berni performs hip replacement surgery for patients with damaged hip joints that cause severe pain and affects quality of life. Arthritis and injuries are the most common causes of hip damage and pain that benefit from a hip replacement.

Though hip replacement is one of the most successful surgical procedures to date, Dr. Berni may only recommend joint replacement when conservative treatments (medications, physical therapy) fail to provide adequate pain relief.

How is hip replacement performed?

Dr. Berni offers two approaches for performing hip replacement. These include:

Outpatient hip replacement

During outpatient hip replacement, Dr. Berni approaches the hip from the front of your body. He uses up to two small incisions, separating the muscles and tendons, to gain access to your damaged hip joint.

Dr. Berni removes the head of your damaged femur and cleans the hip socket, places the prosthetic devices, puts the joint and soft tissue back in place, and sutures the incisions.

Most patients go home the same day following Dr. Berni’s outpatient hip replacement.

SuperPath® hip replacement

SuperPath hip replacement is the most advanced hip replacement procedure. With a SuperPath hip replacement, Dr. Berni avoids cutting any muscles or tendons, minimizing tissue damage and recovery time.

With SuperPath hip replacement, Dr. Berni uses state-of-the-art technology and advanced surgical techniques that allow him to remove the diseased hip and implant the new components while your hip remains in a natural rested position.

As with outpatient hip replacement, most patients undergoing SuperPath hip replacement go home the same day.

SuperPath hip replacement is the least invasive hip replacement procedure and may significantly shorten your recovery time. Almost any patient in need of a hip replacement may be a candidate for this advanced approach.

What are the benefits of minimally invasive hip replacement?

  • Minimal blood loss
  • Shorter rehabilitation
  • Earlier return to work
  • Less tissue damage
