Joint Pain Q&A

What is joint pain?

Joint pain includes any discomfort or tenderness you feel in a joint. The pain may develop from damage or disease that affects one or more of the structures that make up your joint, including bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, or muscles.

Your joint pain may be mild and only occur after engaging in certain physical activities. Or, your pain may be severe, making it hard for you to manage everyday activities.

Joint pain may affect any joint in your body. Dr. Berni specializes in diagnosing and treating joint pain that affects the hips, knees, and thumbs.

What causes joint pain?

Injuries, overuse, or an underlying disease may lead to joint pain. However, arthritis is the most common cause. Arthritis is a general term that describes pain and inflammation within the joint and includes conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Other causes of joint pain are:

  • Bursitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Strains and sprains
  • Fractures
  • Dislocation

You may be able to manage your mild joint pain with at-home care, but if your joint pain is so bad it keeps you from doing the things you love, Dr. Berni can help.

What are the medical treatments for joint pain?

Dr. Berni is an experienced orthopedic surgeon. However, he takes a conservative approach to care and believes early intervention for joint pain may prevent or delay the need for surgery.

Some of the innovative medical treatments he offers include:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections

PRP is a form of regenerative medicine that Dr. Berni uses to manage many orthopedic conditions, including joint pain. PRP contains a high concentration of platelets from your own blood.

Platelets have clotting and growth factors that your body releases to heal injured or diseased tissue. With PRP injections, Dr. Berni delivers a high concentration of these healing elements directly to the injured joint to accelerate the healing process.

Cortisone injections

Dr. Berni provides cortisone injections to reduce pain and inflammation for up to two months in the affected joint.

What are surgical treatments for joint pain?

When medical interventions fail to provide significant relief from your joint pain, Dr. Berni may suggest surgery.

For joint pain procedures, Dr. Berni uses minimally invasive tools and techniques when possible to reduce scarring and recovery time. Surgical procedures he performs for joint pain include:

  • Outpatient hip and knee replacement
  • SuperPath® hip replacement
  • Total knee replacement
  • Non-cemented total knee replacement
  • Partial knee replacement
  • Knee arthroscopy
  • Carpometacarpal (CMC) arthroplasty for the thumb

The structure and function of your joints make them susceptible to joint pain. For expert care of your joint pain, call the office of Anthony J. Berni, MD, or schedule an appointment online today.
